Why Teens May Turn to Substance Abuse

Your teen can be introduced to alcohol in a variety of ways, with each teen having their own reasons to experiment with alcohol or continuing to drink that needs to be addressed. Understanding the stresses behind alcohol use can ensure your son has access to the most pertinent and effective program possible that personalizes the skills, strategies, and behavioral health care services he needs.

Curiosity & Experimentation

For some teens, simple curiosity can lead to experimenting with alcohol. Early exposure to these substances, such as casual use by parents at home, can instill this curiosity, with many teens looking for an opportunity to experiment with alcohol themselves.

Family and/or Home Environment

Home life can also influence a teen’s use of alcohol. Familial use, lax supervision at home with accessible alcohol in the house, or having family members who regularly use alcohol can all impact a teen’s perception of alcohol, leading to viewing alcohol as less dangerous than it really is or getting unhealthy ideas of the role alcohol plays in daily life.

Social and Cultural Influences

Teens may also have a warped perception of alcohol due to pervasive media norms. Cultural events that celebrate alcohol use, television and online commercials, celebratory depictions of alcohol in music, and more all create a perception of alcohol for teens that can lead to alcohol use, with repeated reinforcements from these sources continuing to facilitate this narrative as substance abuse and addiction develop

Peer Pressure & Desire to
Fit In

A desire to fit in with social expectations, pressures, or certain social groups can also put a lot of pressure on teens to act against their own better judgment in order to be accepted by peers. Teens who may be wary or resistant to exploring alcohol can still find themselves experimenting with these substances to fit in, and may feel pressured to continue to do so, or pressured to enjoy alcohol use as addiction develops. The stress of social rejection or embarrassment can seem more prevalent than the consequences of use.

Stress, Anxiety, or Coping With Mental Health Issues

For other teens, persistent stress, anxiety, or feelings of depression can all inform self-destructive coping strategies, including the use of alcohol in an attempt to self-medicate these challenges. However, these stresses can come from a variety of sources, from academic stress and pressures to succeed or upcoming deadlines, projects, exams, even college pressures and plans, to stresses at home with family members, personal relationships, and more.

Addressing underlying mental health issues is paramount to addressing the role the alcohol plays in daily life, with dedicated dual diagnosis treatment being paramount for truly transformative care.

Signs Your Teen May Need Treatment for Alcohol

Recognizing the signs that your teen may need treatment is difficult. Many families may be in disbelief that addiction could hit so close to home, with someone they care so much about. However, there are signs that treatment is necessary, or that it is time to call for more information on addiction, the options available to your son, and how to proceed. These signs include:
  • Drinking to cope with mood/behavior changes
  • Declining school or social functioning
  • Risky or dangerous behaviors
  • Tolerance or withdrawal symptoms

It is never too early to learn more about addiction. If you are curious about signs that may indicate your son has a problem with alcohol, then contacting Resilience Recovery Resources to learn more about teen addiction and our teen alcohol rehab in Florida can ensure that you are equipped with the education necessary to take the next step.

Recovery Begins Today

Watching a teen struggle with addiction can be heartbreaking. You don’t have to go through it alone. Contact our admissions team, and we’ll help support and guide you and your teen to the appropriate level of care they need to heal from addiction.

Our Levels of Care for Teens With Alcohol Addiction

Finding the right level of care depends on the severity of addiction, underlying mental health needs, and unique factors that impact your teen’s journey with alcohol use. We offer partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient programs, all personalized to fit the needs and goals of your teen while balancing mental health, academic support, and integrated family care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our partial hospitalization program is provided on-site and is an intensive form of care that serves as a “step down” from further care options, such as detoxification, inpatient treatment, and residential treatment. These programs include 25 hours of group programming, supported by individual care, daily structure, and evidence-based healing options like cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and more.

Our PHP is further supported by academic support and a culture of healing at our recovery center, integrating you into our healing community in Florida, where you can meet others on their own journeys to sober success. With family integration and follow-up meetings, we work with entire families to facilitate healing both inside our walls and at home.

Outpatient Program
(OP)

OP is our least intensive program, consisting of about 6 hours of programming a week, and is designed for teens who have completed higher levels of care, have demonstrated proficiency in employing coping strategies, and feel supported by an educated and involved family at home.

Each of our programs explores not just the role of alcohol in your teen’s life, but also underlying mental health disorders, stresses, and personal needs that all impact their relationship with addictive substances. With holistic treatments, combined with practical life-skills training at all levels of care, we go beyond surface-level effects of addiction to empower your teen to build a new and fulfilling sober life.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient care is a further step-down option, acting as an ongoing care option for teens who have completed PHP and are continuing to develop a healthy, sober life at home. This option includes about 10 to 15 hours of group therapy per week with individualized support, adjusting your son’s healing program to adapt to new stresses or challenges that arise in their alcohol-free life to prevent relapse.

What to Expect in Our Programs

Taking the first step into any level of care can be intimidating, whether you are beginning our PHP or embracing new freedoms in outpatient care. Academic & Social Reintegration

School planning and coordination are available throughout each of our programs, with those enrolled having access to a Florida-licensed special education teacher at a satellite location to balance ongoing academics while addressing alcohol addiction.

Case management and specialized skill-building programs are also available, including mock interviews and resume building for entering a career path, as well as personal skills such as budgeting, navigating legal issues, and managing appointments.

We also provide a culture and community of peers to explore a new social life in sobriety, challenging previously-held social norms and embracing a sober community that champions sobriety, accountability, and personal interests while fostering healthy social connections and purposeful engagement.

FAQs

Can a 15-year-old go to rehab?

Yes. Alcohol addiction can affect people of any age, and those exposed to alcohol use early in life can be at an increased risk of developing addiction, even during these important developmental years. We offer dedicated adolescent alcohol addiction programs for ages 14 to 17, catering treatment to the unique challenges and stresses of the age group while exploring pertinent options and proven care.

Healing starts with a single phone call to explore your son’s needs and the healing options available. During your call, we can determine the necessary services and needs, and begin building a plan that supports your teen’s healing, or provide a referral to the most appropriate care if necessary.

Yes, health insurance plans will cover the cost of alcohol addiction treatment. However, exactly what is covered will depend on your specific healthcare plan and level of care. Calling to verify your benefits and explore your coverage can help determine your plan’s coverage and any out-of-pocket costs, deductibles, or limitations before beginning treatment with us, so there are never any surprises when it comes to your coverage or financial responsibilities.

The length of each program depends on the severity of addiction and each person’s progress. Resilience Recovery Resources uses a level system, with clients moving between levels as they progress, evaluated based on their applications and team reviews.

First is our Orientation Stage, where clients are on blackout and receiving care, with a minimum time of two weeks before applications can open to move to Level One. Level One clients remain under a house restriction while receiving care, with a minimum 45-day waiting period before applications are opened to advance to Level Two.

Advancing to Level Two provides greater freedoms but also demands greater responsibility. This requires that your teen demonstrate practiced coping skills, a commitment to healing, active engagement in group therapy, and actively working on the Twelve Steps, with a focus on steps one to five.

On average, clients spend about 6–9 months progressing from Orientation to Level Three. Level Three offers the most freedoms, including off-site travel and personal privileges.

Healing from alcohol addiction is a process and demands a lot of work. However, with the right support and effort, healing is always possible.

Finding the right treatment depends on your unique needs, goals, and severity of addiction. No two journeys are the same, and talking with a representative at Resilience Recovery Resources can help ensure we build a program that fits your teen’s needs and healing goals.

We work with trusted local facilities and can provide referrals to appropriate detox services as needed before beginning a healing program. Resilience Recovery Resources also offers transition services to ensure there are no gaps between completing detox and beginning the next stage of healing.

Yes, we accept referrals and are ready to work with you to explore your teen’s personal needs.

Absolutely. We understand that alcohol addiction is a family disease, and we offer integrated family programming so you and your son can heal from addiction together, reaching new levels of support, understanding, communication, and forgiveness for a lasting, sober, and healthy future.
