Why Families & Young Adults Trust Us

For nearly a decade, Resilience Recovery Resources has supported adolescent and young adult males through developmentally informed, family-centered care. Our transitional model emphasizes clinical excellence, accountability, and the life skills needed for sustainable recovery and independence.

Age and gender-specific care for adolescent and young adult males: Programming is thoughtfully designed around the developmental needs of young men ages 14–28. Separate tracks ensure care remains age-appropriate, clinically relevant, and aligned with each stage of growth.

Licensed clinicians and evidence-based treatment methods: Our multidisciplinary team delivers evidence-based care grounded in relational and attachment-focused principles, including the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM). Treatment prioritizes emotional healing while building practical skills for long-term stability.

Small group sizes for personalized attention: Low client-to-staff ratios allow for individualized support, meaningful therapeutic relationships, and consistent clinical oversight. Each client is known, supported, and actively guided throughout their recovery process.

Trauma-informed, holistic care approach: Care is trauma-informed and developmentally responsive, addressing the underlying experiences that often contribute to substance use. We support the whole person — emotionally, socially, academically, and vocationally.

Ongoing family therapy and communication: Families remain closely involved through weekly therapy, regular updates, and dedicated care coordination. This collaborative approach strengthens communication, rebuilds trust, and supports lasting change beyond the program.

Beautiful and structured sober living environments: FARR-accredited residences provide a safe, structured setting that reinforces accountability while promoting independence. Each home is intentionally designed to reflect real-world living, helping clients practice the skills needed for a successful transition.

Understanding Opioid Addiction & Its Impact

Many family members and loved ones can be in disbelief that opioid addiction could hit so close to home. However, understanding the use of opioids, their impact, and the treatment options available can empower family members to understand the challenges of addiction and how to take the first step toward change.

What Are Opioids?

Opioids are a class of natural or synthetic drugs that block opioid receptors in the brain, relieving pain but causing a relaxing and euphoric effect while releasing a rush of dopamine. This dopamine “rewards” a person for using the drug, causing them to feel good despite other negative consequences and facilitating further dangerous use.

Opioids are typically prescribed for pain relief and intended for use under medical supervision and prescription by a health professional. However, even prescription opioids can present challenges, with opioids like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and codeine all having addictive properties, especially when used for long courses or for reasons not directed by a health care provider.

Illicit opioids like heroin and fentanyl can present even more challenges, with unexpected side effects and dangers due to being intentionally manufactured to be extremely potent, and may include unknown substances.

Effects of Opioids on the Brain & Body

Opioid use can cause a rush of dopamine while providing pain relief and feelings of euphoria. However, they also have a sedative effect, slowing breathing, reaction times, and other functions.

Repeated use of opioids can lead to further challenges, including emotional dysregulation and mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, panic, and paranoia. It also decreases the brain’s natural ability to produce dopamine without the drug, making it difficult to find pleasure in other parts of life. This is alongside an increasing tolerance, necessitating more of the drug to achieve the same effects as before, leading to higher doses and increasing risks of life-threatening side effects like overdose.

The Opioid Epidemic & Public Health Impact

Opioid addiction is more common than many realize. Over prescription of opioids as pain medications and increased production and potency of illicit opioids led to a massive rise in opioid addiction and the opioid crisis that still impacts communities today. Visits to the emergency department and drug overdose deaths also rose, especially alongside the rise of illicit synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which is not only potent and dangerous on its own, but can also be cut into other substances without a person knowing, such as marijuana.

Unfortunately, these devastating outcomes are also more common than many may realize, with about 105,000 overdose deaths recorded in 2023, about 80% of which involved opioids in some way.

Signs, Symptoms & Risks of Opioid Addiction

Knowing the signs and symptoms of opioid addiction can empower you to take action, providing necessary early intervention or overdose prevention for your son or loved one.

Common Signs of Opioid Misuse

Some common signs of opioid misuse and addiction include:

  • Intense cravings for more of the drug
  • “Doctor shopping,” or going to multiple doctors to procure multiple prescriptions
  • Using up all of a prescription early
  • Taking opioids to address other needs, such as anxiety
  • Neglecting personal, professional, or academic responsibilities
  • Increase in mood swings, anxiety, depression, or anger

Risk Factors for Opioid Addiction

Some situations and risks can increase the chances of developing opioid addiction. These include:
  • Chronic pain
  • A genetic history of addiction to opioids or other substances
  • Underlying trauma or mental health needs
  • Peer pressures or social factors that celebrate drug use
  • Access to drugs, either through social circles or curiosity, when living with a loved one with a prescription
  • Misconceptions about the safety of prescription drugs

Adolescents, teens, and young adults may also explore drugs as an option to cope with social stresses, academic pressures, or curiosity, which, if left unaddressed, can continue into addiction.

Risk of Overdose

Increasing tolerance, increased potency of illicit opioids, or mixing opioids with other substances like benzodiazepines or alcohol can all increase the risk of overdose. Those using opioids alone can also be without the necessary support to address overdose, leading to potentially disastrous outcomes. Some signs of an opioid overdose include:
  • Slowed respiratory rate, or stopping breathing altogether
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Blue lips or fingertips
  • Clammy, flushed skin
  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Vomiting

However, there are options. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved potentially life-saving measures like access to Naloxone, which can help reverse the symptoms of an overdose. Emergency personnel or family members suspecting a loved one of using opioids can carry this potentially life-saving measure.

Opioid Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal can be common when trying to cut back or stop opioid use. Symptoms often include muscle aches, sweating, nausea, anxiety, depression, mood swings, and restlessness. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe and demand medical attention. Committing to a professional medical detox program can provide the support, care, and addiction medicine necessary to overcome withdrawal symptoms and transition to further levels of care.

Our Levels of Care for Opioid Addiction Treatment

We offer different levels of care and transitional support to help your son reach their next milestone while keeping the program personalized to their healing needs.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our on-site partial hospitalization program (PHP) serves as a “step down” from higher-level care options such as detox or residential care. PHPs include 25 hours of group programming, supported by individual care, daily structure, and evidence-based healing options like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and more, before returning home at night.

Our PHP also provides academic support and a culture of healing, integrating your son into our community in Florida, meeting peers on their own journeys to sober success.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is the next step down, acting as an ongoing care option for adolescents and young adults who have completed PHP and are continuing to develop the strategies for maintaining their opioid-free life. This option includes 10 to 15 hours of group therapy per week with individualized support, adjusting your son’s healing program to adapt to new stresses or challenges that arise to prevent relapse and celebrate new milestones.

Outpatient Program (OP)

Our outpatient program (OP) is our least intensive program, and consists of about 6 hours of programming a week. This level of care is tailored to men who have completed a higher level of care, demonstrated proficiency in employing coping strategies, and benefit from an educated and involved family support system.

However, continued outpatient support, alumni integration, and community-based recovery are all available even after graduation to keep you engaged in our healing culture while updating personal strategies.

Common Medications

There are multiple medications used in overcoming opioid addiction with a range of benefits, from addressing specific withdrawal symptoms to managing urges and supporting relapse prevention. Medications like Suboxone are commonly utilized, as well as naltrexone, to empower those overcoming OUD to continue pushing toward their next milestone.

There are also options like methadone or buprenorphine. However, these medications are only under the supervision of a medical professional at a dedicated clinic.

Safety & Oversight

Our commitment to clinical excellence also means that we provide ongoing safety and oversight throughout each program, not only by monitoring the use of medication, but also by creating an atmosphere that supports change, comfort, and acceptance.

Treating the Root Causes of Opioid Addiction

We help heal more than surface-level symptoms, instead working with you in a collaborative effort to get to the root cause of opioid addiction. Our team looks at factors such as emotional dysregulation, trauma, developmental challenges, and co-occurring disorders.

Personalized programs, integrated family care, evidence-based therapies, and relational healing are all included as an approach to change. We also utilize the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) to provide relational healing and effective care.

Evidence-Based & Relational Therapies

CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing (MI), and other evidence-based modalities are all utilized in each treatment program. We also explore effective relational therapies, examining the role of social influences and relationships in connection to behaviors, identity, and well-being, giving your son the skills needed to take pride in their sober healing.

Family Support & Involvement

We are committed to integrating family support and education into the healing process. Integrated family therapies, education, support, and involvement are all championed to help your family explore communication, forgiveness, and effective support practices at home.

Daily Life & Routine in Treatment

Each day in our treatment program is structured to create new opportunities with a bed of consistency and proven care.

Adolescents

Our adolescent program starts early in the morning, around 7:00 a.m. With structured days, as well as academic support and programs to continue education while in recovery through programs with our Florida-licensed special education teacher, all surrounded by clinical groups and opportunities for peer engagement, these programs tend to the unique challenges of adolescents overcoming opioid addiction.

Young Adults

Our young adult program starts a little later in the day than our adolescent program, allowing for opportunities to work in the morning before attending on-site programming. These programs also focus on balancing responsibilities while addressing age-specific challenges that each person faces.

Evenings

Each evening provides structure and opportunities to reflect on the day and personal needs through 12-Step meetings, time for reflection, and exploration of accountability.

Phase System & Accountability Model

We utilize a phase system, with varying levels as each person reaches new milestones. From orientation to level three progression, these levels are divided not only by progress and personal commitment to a sober future, but also include new privileges as each new level is reached. This system is designed to structure healing into manageable milestones while ensuring safety and accountability, empowering each person to heal at their own pace while receiving the most appropriate care.

When to Seek Help for Opioid Addiction

Knowing when to seek help is difficult, but there are signs that professional care may be necessary, including:

  • Increasing use or dependence, leading to increased overdose risk
  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Difficulty cutting down or stopping on one’s own
  • Mental health decline

Familiarizing yourself with these signs can inform early intervention and healing efforts.
